shame on you, California

Photobucket

Today, the CA Supreme Court announced their decision to uphold the horrible initiative that is Proposition 8. I have never in my life been more embarrassed to be from California. Shame on the individuals for voting for this proposition based on pure hatred and, let's face it, pure ignorance; and shame on the CA supreme court for not realizing that this should have been invalidated. I pity the people who think they are "protecting marriage" but excluding much of the population who just want to marry the people they love. Equal rights people -- ever heard of it? Separate is NOT equal. It's 2009... I can't believe this is even up for discussion.

Seriously, f&@* you, California.

I think it's time to move to another state... I hear Iowa is lovely...

Below, I have pasted in an email that I sent around to my friends and family right before the Nov. 4th election. It caused some drama before, but I feel it's relevant and helps to prove a point-- and frankly I am confident that almost all of our friends and family feel this same way... This is our personal (and liberal!) blog, so I think it's plenty appropriate! If you don't agree... you probably shouldn't read on ;)

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong:

1) Being gay is not natural.
Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay.
The same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior.
People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all.
Women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed.
The sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children.
Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children...
Since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion.
In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home.
That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society...
We could never adapt to new social norms, just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Yeah, gay marriage is really harmful. Please.

Why, hello there, Mr. President

Photobucket

"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."

Wow, what an amazing day! 1.20.09. A historical day, and one we will remember forever. Barack Obama was finally inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States!! Brian is lucky and has a television at his desk so he was able to watch everything at work. I, unfortunately, could not. We're not even really allowed to stream video at my desk but I tried doing that anyway... eventually I gave up on the web and snuck down to Caffe Primo (downstairs in Sunset Plaza) with my coworker
where they have televisions set up, and made it there just in time to see Obama getting sworn in, and then stayed to watch his speech. Everyone in Primo was clapping. It was incredible.

At home, Brian and I watched it all again along with other events happening that day. And we watched the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball, which was just amazing. I mean, for what other President would all of this be arranged? None, I say. Over 2 million people showed up to watch the Inauguration (oh, how I wish we could have been there), and that ball--well, welcome to the 21st century! It's amazing how PRESIDENT OBAMA inspired and continues to inspire millions of people and how he has already started to bring this country into the modern times we've been waiting for...

I really believe that Obama will change this country for the better-- I really do. And the fact that I get to look at him for at least the next 4 years... well, that's just a bonus! ;) (Hey, can you blame a girl for crushing on this President?! haha Don't worry, Brian, you're still my #1!)

I am so looking forward to seeing what is to come from President Obama... and his Jewish administration!
So far, we have:
Rahm Emanuel - Chief of Staff - Jewish
David Axelrod - Senior Advisor to the President - Jewish
Ronald Klain - Chief of Staff to the Vice President of the United States - Jewish
Larry Summers - Economic Advisor to the President - Jewish
Paul Volcker - Economic Advisor to the President, Former Head of Fed Reserve - Jewish
Peter Orszag - Head of Budget - Jewish
(we're pretty sure.....)

Hmmm... maybe Obama will convert... ;)

Keep hangin' loose, Mr. President!

And since we won't have a president to make fun of for hopefully a VERY long time, here's a little send-off to our former comedian--er, President-- Dubya! Thanks for 8 years of laughs-- and for leading our country into 2 wars and the worst economic situation in history. Sayonara!

one more video for the road!

Pretty much sums it up...

We just had an *inkling* this would be an exciting election (not sure if it was a gut feeling, or the fact that Barack was whooping McCain's butt in every single poll! haha), so we invited our friends (and fellow Barack groopies) over to celebrate with a little Election Party/ birthday party for Brian & Ashley (Justin's gf) who happen to share a birthday!

Here are some pictures of our crazy night!
